Encore Bernese Mountain Dogs
Breeding for health, temperament and conformation to AKC standards
Bernese Mountain Dogs, also called Berner Sennenhund and nicknamed Berners, are working dogs. These loyal companions originated from the Canton of Bern in Switzerland and were all purpose farm dogs. They were the guardians of the farm also helping the farmer by driving cattle, and especially by pulling the milk cart into the village. These jobs nurtured the nature of these stunning tricolored dogs.
Their job as protector of the farm is evident in their temperament. Around small children they often show a quietness that is heartwarming. Always curious and always gentle. Some Berners may appear standoffish until they get to know someone. After that, they can be found making themselves comfortable on that someone’s foot! Many are friendly right off the bat, so shoes are always a good idea around Berners. The Bernese also have a sense of humor and will play games with their people. While they are generally cheerful dogs, they are not typically overly excitable nor do they need an abundance of exercise. Some prefer to nap at home, and others are eager to explore the neighborhood. These loyal companions and do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. Time with people is of utmost importance to the Bernese.
